Welcome Bellevue University Students!
I am delighted to be your professor for the term. I wanted to give you some insight into who I am and my expectations for the course.
To start, here are my links. You will find my LinkedIn profile if you are interested in my professional or educational background, my email address, and my Calendly link if you wish to book 1x1 time with me.
Teaching Style
Default - You are adults, so my default style is ‘hands off. If you have questions or need to discuss potential issues, please call/text, email, or book time with me. I will interact with you in the grade book (check for feedback), discussions, Teams, announcements, and am always available if you need anything.
Assignments - I would like to see APA/MLA format used. You do not need to go crazy with the formatting as this is not an English course, but generally, your assignments should have a flow to them, such as a title page or header/footer, the content, and the citations (reference page and in-text citations).
Discussions - I would like to see as much effort put into these as you would put into your assignments. This means creating your introductory post and replies according to or exceeding the instructions to create a flow of discussion.
Quizzes - These may be open books/notes.
Late Work - Turn it in! You will lose fewer points if you reach out to me about your late work ahead of time.
Generative AI Statement
Yes - It is allowed in my classes. Generative Artificial intelligence (GenAI) is here to stay. It’s important that you know how to responsibly operate it. Those who don't know how to use GenAI wisely may lose job spots to those who do. Thus, you may use LLMs (large language models) including ChatGPT, Bing AI, Bard, Claude, Quillbot, Grammarly, etc., as collaborative tools to help you generate and develop ideas, as well as to proofread and give feedback on usage and tone, but not as a sole source for written content creation.
Use these GenAI tools as digital assistants but never let them take over the process and subsume your personality. We desire to have you as the human writer shine through, particularly in interactive online conversations. Actively engage with the AI, verify the information, make sure at least 51% is human, and cite your sources properly (see https://apastyle.apa.org/blog/how-to-cite-chatgpt for examples). Keep a record of your conversations with the AI in case you need them later.
Location:
I am located in De Pere, WI (Green Bay Area - Central US Time Zone)
Me
A quick bio:
I was born (1988), raised in Davenport, Iowa, and live in De Pere, Wisconsin.
I served eight years in the US Air Force in the Security Forces field (physical security with some law enforcement work). I worked my way up through the IT and cybersecurity fields, starting with the help desk and landing in my current roles of consultant and professor. If you are interested in what my day job is, my team publishes a blog here: https://resources.sygnia.co.
I am pursuing my MBA at Bellevue University as well, to learn more about the business side of things to perfect my craft. I hope it will lead to leadership opportunities later down the road. (CISO, Director, VP, etc.)
I am married to my wife, Brandi; we had our first child (Brooklyn) in August of 2021, and our son (Jordan) in June of 2023. We went through IVF, and we are happy with how lucky we have been through the process. We are finished and complete.
Suppose I have ANY time between my full-time job (consultant), part-time position (professor), family (father/husband/etc.), and education. In that case, I like to play video games (Xbox, old RPGs), read graphic novels (comic books), travel (see pictures - I have been around the world and am still traveling, most recently to Israel), and I enjoy a brew from time to time.
